Bio

Originally from Wellington, New Zealand. Rachelle began her flute career in the classical world, performing with local orchestras and the NZAF band. Her eclectic tastes eventually led her into the jazz world, where she can often be heard playing flute funk or performing with the beloved anarchistic jazz group The Troubles. Rachelle lived in Montreal for two years, further expanding her skills on the jazz flute. She has also spent time in Cuba, studying with the great Orlando ‘Maraca’ Valle, and in New York. While in Canada, Rachelle performed with well-known jazz flutists Bill McBirnie and Billy Kerr, among other local jazz, Brazilian, Cuban, hip hop, and neo-soul musicians.

Teaching Info

Rachelle is a passionate teacher and has been teaching the flute for over 20 years. What sets her apart from other teachers is her strong foundation in both jazz and classical flute and her ability to teach a wide range of music. Her teaching style is friendly and fun, with the aim being to create self-fulfilment and self-directed results.

Rachelle has a strong emphasis on technique and uses an integrated approach to teaching, developing all aspects of musicianship. She does this using creative approaches which are fun and inspiring. Rachelle teaches improvisation as well which is a fun creative outlet for students.

Rachelle has had a lot of success teaching her New Zealand students over skype and has spaces available to offer her expertise to new students. Students may enter jazz or classical exams through either Trinity College London or ABRSM all the way through to diploma level.

Rachelle taught my daughter the flute for nearly four years. She has a lovely, warm manner and was always so kind and encouraging. My daughter really enjoyed her lessons and improved so much in all areas - playing the flute, posture, confidence, theory, and making a beautiful sound.
